After a tryout, he was signed to his first full-time Winston Cup contract as Osterlund's only sponsored driver in 1979. The following year he joined the Rod Osterlund Racing for a rookie season, winning a race in Bristol and finishing 7th in the standings. He had a new chief, Doug Richert, in his sophomore season when he went on to win several races in Atlanta, Bristol, Nashville and Charlotte.
