I’ve seen arguments that everyone has an equal opportunity. The idea that people can overcome their circumstances is very simplistic idea. It is an idea that makes us feel good. Equality of Opportunity is partly motivated by the plausibility of treating individuals equally and partly motivated by the unattractiveness of giving each person the same, or Equality of Outcome. Equality of Outcome requires that individuals have some share of goods, not merely a chance to obtain them without the hindrance of some obstacles. Most people think the words equal opportunity and equal outcome can be used interchangeably. This is far from true.

Equal Outcomes. In society today equality is not a reality. Government has little control over this problem; people who want to be discriminatory in one way or the other will be discriminatory. Two issues that are very hard to distinguish between involving equality are equal opportunity and equal outcome. A good example of a distinction made between the two goes as follows: Equality of opportunity provides in a sense that all start the race of life at the same time. Equality of outcome attempts to ensure that everyone finishes at the same time.
